Year 11-13 Option Selection

Most students at Rosmini College go on to study in Year 13.  The majority of students in Year 13 will be attempting to gain University Entrance and NCEA Level 3.

For this reason, before choosing Level 1 and 2 subjects, students and parents should look at Level 2 and 3 subjects (including those that can be started at a higher level). If a student has a particular career in mind, the prerequisites for this should be investigated.

All Year 11, 12 and 13 students study six subjects.

Included in the six subjects is Religious Education and Physical Education are compulsory.

 Level 1 (Year 11) Courses

  • Students are able to select THREE subjects and 1 backup/ reserve subject.
  • RE/ PE, English and Mathematics are compulsory and will be automatically selected.
  • There are different pathways offered in English and Mathematics to suit individual student requirements. The Head of each of these Departments will consult with the teaching staff to ensure students are placed in the correct pathway.
  • A Science is not compulsory but is recommended.
  • If you select General Science you cannot select Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

Level 2 (Year 12) Courses

  • Students are able to select FOUR subjects and 1 backup/ reserve subject.
  • RE/PE and English are compulsory and will be automatically selected.
  • Mathematics is not compulsory but is recommended.

Level 3 (Year 13) Courses

All Year 13 students are required to study FIVE subjects as well as RE and PE.

The majority of students in Year 13 will be attempting to gain University Entrance.

For this reason, before choosing Level 3 subjects, students and parents should look at the Level 3 subjects, and ensure if university is a consideration for the future, that 4 of the options chosen are university approved

(The only subject that is not University approved is Gateway)

If a student has a particular career in mind, the prerequisites for this should be investigated.

Important to note at Level 3 (Year 13)

  • RE and PE are compulsory and will be automatically selected.
  • Students need to select 5 other options they want to take in 2021.
  • We recommend students choose at least one English rich subject.
  • Students planning to go to University need to ensure they have at least four University approved subjects.
  • Students picking up a new academic subject at Year 13 need to have gained at least 14 credits in an English rich subject at Level 2.

Rosmini College's timetable is student-driven and a new timetable is generated each year based on student subject selection. Unfortunately, while we do our best to avoid them, timetabling clashes may still occur and a few students may be required to choose an alternative subject option.
