The figures double entry accounting generates have become a sophisticated system of numbers which in the twenty-first century rules the global economy and many aspects of our daily lives.

More than ever now we need visionaries and strategic thinkers who can transform businesses to survive in the future. Accountants of the future need to be able to advise clients and business leaders around sustainability, the risks associated with climate change and how to account for carbon.

Reporting for sustainability has become a key issue and international universities ate now offering Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Assurance courses to equip accountants and managers of the future to assist business to set goals and controls to achieve targets. The measurement and consideration of non-financial issues have become as important as the financial issues and an integrated approach needs to be adopted.

Accountants of today and the goiung forward need to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers searching for a sustainable future, both financial and non-financial for society as a whole.
