NCEA Level 2 Accounting

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs L. van Wyk.

Accounting the Language of Business - a life skill.

Financial literacy within the workplace is a huge asset whether you own and run your own business, or alternatively manage a company on behalf of others. Understanding the financial reports and management accounts is hugely valuable for decision making. Accounting is not only about processing, but about interpreting the numbers and knowing what to do going forward with the aim of growing a business.

In the workplace today, it is often assumed that the person entering a position within commerce understands budgets, sales figures, prevailing interest rates and their impact on decision making. We also look at non-financial measures and their impact on the overall performance of the business. The focus is on sustainability in its various forms, including economic, environmental, social, and cultural. Studying accounting can only benefit anyone thinking of going into the world of commerce.

Topics in Level 2 include; Inventory Management, Accounts Receivable Management, Preparing Financial Statements, use of an online processing software package (MYOB or Xero), as well as Interpreting Financial Statements.

Skills acquired include logical thinking and a comprehensive understanding of the Accounting process.

During the year, we introduce the issue of sustainability and accounting for non-financial issues. This has become especially relevant at a time when globally business and industry has been significantly affected by Coronavirus. The implications on accounting and reporting of both financial and non-financial issues business practices with the issue of sustainability going forward are researched and presented. Business, industry leaders and accountants of the future, are challenged with the creation of strategic visions incorporating management control systems that will lead their businesses and /or clients into ethical and sustainable accounting and reporting practices to improve corporate governance globally. The industry needs visionaries and strategic thinkers more than ever today and in the post Coronovirus world.
