HoD: Mr Roger Latch

NOTE: Entry is restricted as the school has limited resources to offer this course.

Entry is by approval only and students should meet to discuss with Mr Latch before selecting as an option.

Gateway is designed for students who wish to explore career options while they are still at school. In Term One students who choose Gateway as a subject will spend time in class exploring career paths they are interested in. Students will make CV’s and discuss employment related issues. They then complete the required Health and Safety, First Aid courses that will allow them to legally go onto work sites.

In Term Two and Three students will work for one day a week in a workplace they are interested in, while in class students will work on unit standards that match this work placement. For example a student keen on working in radio/broadcasting will complete standards specifically related to this work. The expectation is that every student will complete between 10 and 20 days of work in an occupation(s) they are interested in during the year.

Cost: No costs, although some work gear may need to be purchased

Prerequisites: No specific academic requirements, but students must have good attendance levels and be able to represent the school appropriately while on work placements. The course is restricted on the number of students able to take it. An interview may be required along with parental support throughout the programme.
