NCEA Level 1 Music

Course Description

This is a course designed around the skills of performance, composition, aural, score reading and musical knowledge. All styles of music are studied, so students who play, or would like to play any style of music (contemporary, rock, classical, indigenous) are welcome in this course.  

Knowledge of music theory is not compulsory but students will be encouraged to develop an understanding of this over the year, albeit at their level. 

Students will learn the following skills: Performing, composing, analysing, listening to and notating music. 

Students will work independently and with others on the following content: Solo and group performance, two compositions, aural transcription, interpreting music score and demonstrating knowledge of the musical elements and features of two musical works.

Recommended Prior Learning

Ideally, students should have had at least two years of lessons on an instrument (voice is also an instrument) as solo and group performance is part of the program.
However, if a student can play an instrument but has not had any formal training, they are most welcome to discuss with the HOD Music, whether NCEA Level 1 Music will be a fit for them. Some students haven't played their instrument for a few years, but find that the skills are still there and can capably achieve in this subject.

Students are encouraged to undertake lessons on their instrument with regular practice at home as minimal classroom time is allocated for this.

Pathway

An education in Music can lead to many pathways for a student. Careers include solo or ensemble performance (orchestras/bands), audio technician, music producer, music educator, live-sound production, film composer, gaming composer, composer/arranger, music editor, music/entertainment journalism, media liaison, communications, tutor etc.
