NCEA Level 1 Foundation English

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. Tait.

Ko te reo te tuakiri

Ko te reo tōku ahurei

Ko te reo te ora

Language is my identity

Language is my uniqueness

Language is my life

Our 11 Foundation English course provides opportunities for ākonga to use literature and language to explore self, society and the wider world.  Whanaungatanga, kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga are at the heart of our subject. This course is tailored to suit the needs of students who find English challenging.  It will lead on to the 12 English Foundation course if students need academic support next year. Students will be encouraged to read regularly to develop their vocabulary and understanding. This class usually has smaller numbers so students have more one-on-one teaching time, and the opportunity to develop the depth of understanding required for Merit and Excellence levels.

Ākonga will learn that:

  • Language and identity are inextricable.

  • Making and creating meaning are processes that occur when we interpret and when we produce text.

  • Reading is a source of enjoyment and enrichment.

Note: 11ENF is a Foundation English course with the same standards as 11ENG. Students will be selected for this course by their Year 10 teachers based on their grades and the support needed to help their success in Level 1 English. The 11EAP course is designed for ESL students and entry to this course is determined by the Head of EAL in collaboration with English teachers as needed.

Disclaimer

Rosmini College's timetable is student-driven and a new timetable is generated each year based on student subject selection. Unfortunately, while we do our best to avoid them, timetabling clashes may still occur and a few students may be required to choose an alternative subject option.

The 2025 timetable, including the number of classes in each subject and staffing allocations, is created based on student selections made in 2024. Because of this, changing subjects at the beginning of 2025 may not be possible. Please, make your subject choices carefully.
